Why transparency should matter when choosing a marketing agency

Why transparency should matter when choosing a marketing agency

Choosing a marketing agency can feel like a leap of faith. You’re trusting someone with your budget, your brand and, often, the future of your business. So why do so many agencies make it hard to see what you’re actually paying for?

Vague retainers, reports full of numbers that don’t mean anything, and a different account manager every few months. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Here’s why transparency should be at the top of your list when you choose who to work with.

1. You should know exactly what you’re paying for

A good agency can tell you what’s included, what isn’t and what it costs before you sign anything. No surprise add-ons, no “that’s out of scope” emails when you ask for something that should have been obvious.

That’s why we publish fixed-price packages. You can see what each one includes, compare them and decide what fits, without a sales call where the price changes depending on who you ask.

2. Reports should explain, not impress

Impressions, reach and engagement rate all have their place, but they don’t pay the bills. Transparent reporting focuses on what matters to your business: enquiries, calls, sales and what each one cost you.

If your agency can’t explain in plain English what happened last month and what they’re changing because of it, that’s a red flag.

3. You should know who’s doing the work

Many agencies win the business with senior people, then hand the work to someone you’ve never met. Ask who’ll actually run your campaigns, design your content and answer your emails.

At DES, the team you meet on your first call is the team that does the work. No hand-offs, no strangers.

4. Honest advice, even when it’s not what you want to hear

Sometimes the best advice is “don’t spend more on ads yet, fix your website first.” A transparent agency will tell you that, even if it means a smaller invoice this month. That honesty is what builds long relationships.

5. No long lock-ins to hide behind

If an agency needs a 12-month contract to keep you, ask why. Good results are the best reason to stay. Transparent agencies are confident enough to earn your business month after month.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • What exactly is included, and what costs extra?
  • Who will be working on my account day to day?
  • What will you report on, and how often?
  • How will we measure whether this is working?
  • What happens if I want to leave?

If the answers are clear, you’re in good hands. If they’re vague, keep looking.
